img24, also known as Aurora, is the default wallpaper of all editions of Windows Vista except for Starter. It is an abstract image with light effects in blue-green shades, and was designed to be reminiscent of aurora borealis, which can be often be seen near Redmond, Washington, USA, the city where Microsoft is based. It became the default wallpaper in build 5840.16389, replacing the wallpaper that was reallocated to img22 in the same build.

img24 was designed to be "peaceful, calm and open", and also features the "flare", a Vista branding element that can be seen in other areas such as the explorer and default screensaver. It was also influenced by Windows XP's default wallpaper Bliss, and was imagined by the design team as being an aurora in the skies above the green hill.[1]

Other versions

Windows Vista also includes a widescreen version named img36; unlike the other widescreen wallpapers in Vista, this is natively widescreen as opposed to being cropped from 1920x1440 to 1920x1200, thus it features extra areas not present in img24. Windows DreamScene also includes an animated 16:9 version of this wallpaper, named vid1337.
