I think I can add french names for Vista/7 sample pictures and titles too

Yeah, this would be a perfect fit for this wiki. When I get round to adding these sections, I'll see if I can find other translations and add them too. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 20:01, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

note that "Fleurs d’oranger" (orange tree flowers) seems to be mistaken (although that's the actual image title)

Thanks! I'll add these once I'm done with adding the ones for XP's wallpapers/sample pictures. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 15:31, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

As for windows XP backgrounds, the only two missing languages (in which the OS was fully localized, as partial localizations couldn't affect image names in XP) are Finnish and Hebrew. Because the localization files don't have wallpaper filenames for those languages, although they do have other filenames in Finnish and Hebrew, it's possible that wallpaper names were never translated in those languages. This would have to be verified however. --WordArtVista (talk) 12:03, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Приветствие программы сканирования

It's okay to create an article about "Welcome Scan.jpg" picture? It's not actually a wallpaper (even tho it large enough to be used as wallpaper), but it's a Windows Fax & Scan sample picture and it included in all Windows versions stating from Windows Vista Like IMG12345, it can be sorted to the "Other" category. --1280px | 08:40, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

It's same as Garden (Windows Vista) but at a higher resolution. --YueLing182 (talk) 13:53, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, so it doesn't need a page of its own. It's already mentioned on the Garden page. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 14:55, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

[solved] broken link on Main Page

Can anyone fix the "user account pictures" link on the main page?

Simply change this: user account pictures

to this: user account pictures

I have no access to it, so I can't do it myself. --1280px | 09:41, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Done. Good catch. I'll probably rename the sample pictures category to use a lower case p too soon. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 14:55, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Use ISO 8601 in the spreadsheet

I'm using MDY on that because I think it's the only format the calendar there supports. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 11:23, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
EDIT: What's that calendar like? I didn't use Google Spreadsheet much as of now. --YueLing182 (talk) 08:38, 25 December 2020 (UTC)
Or you could change the locale to Canada (English) so YYYY-MM-DD would work (go to File > Spreadsheet settings). YueLing182 (talk) 08:10, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
Are you done? ThatRandomToast (talk) 08:20, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

[suggestion] Quick OS navigation table

Windows Vista (2007)

the default wallpaper, img24.
The default wallpaper, img24.

Codename: Windows Longhorn
<<< Precessor
Windows XP
Successor >>>
Windows 7
extra bottom space for other info

The current OS navigation system is pretty inconvenient - to quickly go from release to builds, you need to look for a link in the text. Switching from one OS to another is even slower - you need to type its name in the search box

So I decided to make a small applet for articles about operating systems to solve these problems.
It has very handy navigation buttons for quick transitions from one Windows version to another or from release to builds and separates all the short but important information in the table on the right side of the screen.

I made it using wikitables. There's probably another way to do it and the source will look cleaner, but I'm not very skilled in MediaWiki and this is the only way I can do it

Hope it (or something like this) will be implemented someday in the future UwU
--1280px | 10:37, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

Yeah, I do agree that navigating between OSs could be better. I do have plans to make infoboxes for each OS containing a few other details like what its default wallpaper is and such, I just haven't got round to it yet. It'll definitely include the previous and next OS. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 11:23, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
Release date and support status should also be added. Also, the navigation box should be a template. ThatRandomToast (talk) 12:51, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
Release date, definitely. Support status, maybe. And of course it would be, all infoboxes/navboxes are templates. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 19:57, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
I've made a template for it (you can found filled template example on my profile page), but I'm not sure how it's possible to make a template to create/remove extra columns in table using {{ }}. It still not finished, so it probably shouldn't be used in Windows articles for now. Also, do we really need support status info? For almost every OS it will be just "Discontinued (date)". --1280px | 05:30, 24 January 2021 (UTC) [ UPD --1280px | 21:10, 25 January 2021 (UTC) ]
Yeah I agree, including support status feels like a slight stretch. Release date/year is fine though. As for the template, it's alright but I think I'll create one that's more consistent with the other infoboxes. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 11:49, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

Delete a file

Since I extracted Windows 8 build 8161's user.jpg from install.wim, can an administrator delete File:User (Windows 8 build 8161).png? --ThatRandomToast (talk) 10:25, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

[solved] Remove a page Windows Longhorn build 4069, 4083-4093 default wallpaper

This page seems to be completely unused.

It probably was intended to be a redirect to the Longhorn builds 4069, 4083-4093 default wallpaper, but because of a typo it leads to the page that doesn't exist.

I guess it should be completely removed rather than fixing the typo. --1280px | 21:10, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Move Starter articles?

Shouldn't articles about Starter pictures be named with Windows version mentioned? I.e. img735 ---> img735 (Windows Vista Starter) --1280px | 03:48, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Meh, not needed. Vista Starter uses a unique number range (img7xx) for its wallpapers, whereas with wallpapers with double digit numbers (and 1xx) those obviously need their version names included since there's so many of them. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 12:35, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Logon/Setup wallpaper category?

How to catogorize logon/setup wallpaper in the navbox? I think they can be marked as a category in the "Wallpaper" section, but they also can be described as a separate category (like with Picture Password images)

And if add a separate category, should it be 2 different categories for setup and logon wp or just one for both of them? --1280px | 19:04, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

In the navbox, perhaps you could have section called "Other backgrounds", which has both setup, logon and possibly others. And "backgrounds" instead of "wallpapers" due to the context they were used in. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 20:35, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
I made some variants, and I personally prefer second since in doesn't waste that much space unlike the first one. I also decided to include Picture Password in this category since it uses only 1 image in almost every single navbox. --1280px | 16:23, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, that seems like a nice approach. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 17:34, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

getty info

Hello, I added every active (web.archive.org) Getty Images link in case of its sudden removal (like the unfortunate one we had in late 2020)

p.s. I started working on Tiled Wallpaper Viewer template but currently its code is pretty trashy (I wanted to make it work through "background-image" on table but there's odd security restriction not allowing to do it, so it simply shows 9 images places side-to-side), does anyone kmow to make it work better? --1280px | 16:12, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Appreciate you saving them, but you should go to the spreadsheet and save all the links there, not just the ones on the wiki. (at least that's what it seems)
That tiled wallpaper viewer thing sounds like a cool idea. Sadly I don't have the knowledge to know how to make it better on a wiki, perhaps you could ask somewhere for help. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 18:29, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

New Page Suggestion - Windows XP Winter Fun Pack 2003 & 2004

Should there be a page for the Windows XP Winter Fun Packs released in 2003 & 2004 respectively?

The Winter Fun Pack 2003 & Winter Fun Pack 2004 for Windows XP included addition wallpapers centered around the season of Winter or Christmas. However, in regards of these wallpapers, the origins of these are unknown (although they could had come from Getty Images or Corbis). Also, it is unknown who the photographers or artists of these wallpapers are.

The Windows XP Fun Packs are still available to download online, just not from the Microsoft website.

Anyone here interested in making pages for the Windows XP Winter Fun Packs released in 2003 & 2004 respectively? --DeveloperPudú (talk) 21:16, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

I’ve honestly held off making pages for downloadable wallpapers, because if one theme/pack gets a page for instance, I would probably have to eventually document every single one, and there’s so many of these it’s very hard and time consuming to keep track of them.
As for the origins of those Winter Fun Pack wallpapers, I have reverse searched them before and they are from Corbis. I haven’t got round to documenting them on the spreadsheet yet but I did add some higher res versions of those in the Windows XP HD Wallpaper Pack. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 01:08, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

So what's your thought on the windows 11 backgrounds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh9643c2P6k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WucfckO0q48

We already have a page for them. In my opinion, I think they're honestly nice. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 17:39, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Windows XP's Downloadable Desktop Themes

Should we make a page for all the official downloadable Windows XP desktop themes released by Microsoft between 2003 to 2006? Very few people and even very few YouTube users know their existence so I've been trying to archive & preserve these downloadable Windows XP desktop themes for the Lost Media Wiki for at least two years now. So we finally have the complete set of desktop themes that Microsoft released as free downloads for Windows XP archived & preserved.

Here's the link to my Lost Media Wiki forum post regarding the previously lost Windows XP desktop themes: https://forums.lostmediawiki.com/thread/4146/completely-microsoft-com-windows-themes

Or if your interested, here's an Internet Archive download link to the official downloadable Windows XP desktop themes: https://archive.org/details/msxpaddonthemes.7z

Should there be a page for the official downloadable desktop themes for Windows XP, or should they be mentioned in the Wiki's Windows XP page? Feel free to provide thoughts and comments. --DeveloperPudú (talk) 19:18, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Oh nice, so you're the person that made that archive and the posts on other forums. Like with the Winter Fun Pack wallpapers, I wouldn't be against them being added here. However, as I said I've been holding off adding downloadable wallpaper stuff (or at least pages on each of them) because documenting every single one would be very time consuming, and I don't have enough time or motivation for that. But yeah, maybe I could at least add a mention in XP's page about how Microsoft released a bunch of downloadable themes and packs during XP's existence. I might document some of the XP ones but unlikely for the 7/8/10 ones. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 20:55, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Could the Lift-off user account picture in Windows XP be the Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51-F mission?

Since the wiki's entry for the Lift-off user account picture depicts the Space Shuttle Challenger taking off, I speculate that the photo might had been taken during the STS-51-F mission that started in July and ended in August 1985. I'm asking this question since I found an image of the STS-51-F take-off that might be very similar to the Lift-off user account picture in Windows XP.

Also, can you make a correction on the wiki's entry for the Lift-off user account picture regarding the final mission that there were seven crew (and not six) that were killed upon the shuttle's disintegration.

So, could STS-51-F be the mission where the original source of Windows XP's Lift-off user account picture was taken? If so, then the correct year the photo was taken could've been 1985. --DeveloperPudú (talk) 01:07, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Looked up photos of the mission and yeah, I do see a photo that is fairly similar, so it's probably that mission. You're right about it killing seven instead of six, so I've fixed that. I might specify that it was possibly that mission in question.
Also it would be a better idea to use the talk pages for the corresponding articles rather than posting all your queries on this one. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 12:06, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

New Page Suggestion - Microsoft Scenes software for Windows 3.1?

Should there be a page for a piece of Windows 3.1 software called Microsoft Scenes? This Microsoft software was a series of wallpapers & screensavers released between 1993 & 1994 that came with stock photographs that could be configured as either a screensaver or a desktop background wallpaper with the Microsoft Scenes software. This is technically what you might call a predecessor to the Microsoft Plus! series of software, minus the games and other utilities.

Should there be a page for Microsoft Scenes for this wiki, or do you think this should be ignored? --DeveloperPudú (talk) 23:33, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

I agree with this. LogoFun13-YT (talk) 02:00, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
I might consider it. It’s arguably in the scope of this wiki too. Unfortunately I’ve not had any luck extracting them from the image files though. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 19:27, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
Maybe make the Microsoft Scenes pages in two parts? These would be Microsoft Scenes 1.0 which had three releases (including one pre-release beta), and Microsoft Scenes 2.0 which had eight releases, as least according to what WinWorldPC organizes them. --Wadmooddeer (talk) 03:39, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
Probably will do that. Once I get the chance (been busy with other projects recently, Windows wallpaper stuff is not a priority for me anymore), I might install all of them on a VM and inspect them. I don’t think I’ll be able to find any or most of the stock photo origins though. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 03:56, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

Random Windows Discovery

So I recently found something within the C:\Windows\System32 folder of Windows 10. This image is proof that it exists. It seems to be a modified version of the default wallpaper for Windows 11, with a transparent background. Isn't that cool? I wonder if it was used for any Windows 11 promotion. LogoFun13-YT (talk) 17:02, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

This is probably worth documenting, yeah. Although I feel this would’ve been better to post on the talk page of the wallpaper in question. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 19:25, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

A Christmas pack for windows XP is discovered!

Some one founds some pictures for windows XP form Christmas of 2003 Along with some Christmas music and effects for windows movie maker! (Should we place these pictures form the winter fun pack to the windows xp page?

Link to the video in question! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ0xS1vcXVU

See a related section above. The Winter Fun packs have been circulating for years, it’s just that MJD brought much more attention to them. While I won’t rule out making pages on them, I haven’t really documented much downloadable wallpaper/theme stuff here yet due to the sheer amount of it there is, and I don’t have time for now. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 03:24, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Interesting discovery found with Windows XP Release Candidate Sample Pictures in Microsoft Plus XP.

About two years ago on the OSForums, I made a discovery on the preview picture for the Plus! My Pictures screensaver on the Plus! XP Launcher program. In the preview picture, you can see about six sample pictures, with five of them being the few sample pictures from the Release Candidate builds being displayed on the 3D Cube of the screensaver. These sample pictures are Winter Forest (later just shortened to Winter in the final release), Surfer, Orange Canyon, Crew and Mountain Vista.

In addition, there is another picture on the cube that doesn't appear in any of the Windows XP beta builds, and it features a dog (or puppy) laying on some grass somewhere outside. It is unknown where this photo was licensed from, but it's speculated that it could be from Getty Images or Corbis, the two companies that provided the majority of images to Microsoft for use in Windows XP.

Here's the original OSForums post that I've made: https://osforums.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=803&sid=c8b4cafddfca103eba6fc467b01341e6

As far as I know, reverse image searching the dog picture on the preview picture of the Plus! My Pictures screensaver from the Plus! XP Launcher program will be a very difficult task, as the original image source is likely lost to time.

Also in the Whistler page, can you mention that five out of the six sample pictures were features on the preview picture for the Plus! My Pictures screensaver in the Plus! XP Launcher program? That would be very appreciated.--Wadmooddeer (talk) 23:05, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Done, I've wrote a paragraph about it on the Whistler page. That being said you're more than welcome to edit the wiki yourself too. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 13:53, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Color schemes

Would the default Windows color schemes also be in the scope of this wiki?
For example, Windows 3.1 has 23 default color schemes (accessible through the "Colors" icon in the Control Panel).
Windows XP had 3 default color schemes for the "XP style" theme, and 21 color schemes for the "Classic style" theme. I once compiled a text list of their English as well as Polish names (I've posted it here).
Would it be a good idea to add some info about these color schemes? JudgeDeadd (talk) 20:45, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

TBH, I don’t think so. Themes (besides from the included wallpapers in them) and visual styles aren’t in the scope of the wiki either, only wallpapers, sample pictures, and some other image content. WindowsAesthetics (talk) 20:50, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

what do you think about putting it somewhere here on wiki? --1280px | 04:08, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

Cool video, but I don't think there's much point putting it on the wiki. Plus there's still some missing ones like downloadable ones (though to be fair there's literally thousands of those especially 2009 onwards), the Vista build 5342 placeholders, and quite a few 8 Beta ones. I can help with the Windows 7 Indian Wallpapers

Hi,

If you guys need help, I can install the Hindi variant of Windows 7 (since I can read + write Hindi).

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by TechActivate 781 (talkcontribs)

Isn't the Hindi localization just a Language Interface Pack on top of en-US? I even tried installing the Hindi LIP on Windows 7 and entering OOBE using Sysprep and continued with the following settings:
  • Language: Hindi
  • Time and currency format: Hindi (India)
  • Location: India
and logged into the newly created user account and it still didn't add the Indian wallpapers. I even tried using Everything by voidtools to search for queries such as *.jpg IN-* -wp *.jpg and can't find the Indian wallpapers. Or could there be a special version of Windows 7 released in India?
Also, please sign your comment with 4 tildes ~~~~. --Lixivite-TRT (talk) 17:04, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

Citations

Is there some sort of template available for formatting or something that adds consistency or are citations written out manually? What do I do if I encounter a dead link? Do I edit the citation to add Archived from the original on 15 May 2023 (where "the original" is a link) like Wikipedia does? Theki (talk) 19:19, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

No, currently there is no such template so you have to add citations manually unless somebody comes with an ides to create this template for this wiki. – Bob2208 (talk) 20:01, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
If there's any way I can spearhead that process I'll try to do it at some point, perhaps. Theki (talk) 20:16, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
O.K., I made Template:Cite. Not sure where it will go from here or if it is worth accepting but for the most part it works as a good w:Template:Cite web replacement. I tried implementing Module:Citation/CS1 but it seemed too overqualified, but the remnants are there if anyone wants to work with it. I hope I'm not messing anything up or overdoing something. Tulips error

The Tulips image cannot be loaded. It says "Sorry, the file cannot be displayed". Dayron (talk) 23:42, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

We should probably add Extension:SimpleBatchUpload

Considering that this is a wallpaper wiki, most people creating a page for an OS would probably be uploading multiple wallpapers at once. However, the process is kind of tedious since MediaWiki doesn't support uploading multiple files at once, so if Extension:SimpleBatchUpload was added, it'd be a life saver. Thank you! --ArcticNiko (talk) 02:00, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
