Windows Wallpaper Wiki:Guidelines
In order to maintain high standards of behavior and article quality, we have some guidelines.
Behavior
- Please cooperate with fellow users. When having a debate with someone, please handle the situation in an adult-like manner, rather than resorting to insulting them.
- Vandalizing pages here is not acceptable. You will only receive one warning if you do so; vandalize after that and you will receive an indefinite ban. In some cases we may instantly ban you, for instance if you and your friends decide to vandalize it together.
- Discrimination is not acceptable here either: this includes ableism, homophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia and xenophobia.
Article quality
- Please write formally. For example, avoid using these in articles:
- Contractions, such as "it's" or "wasn't"
- First/second person pronouns, such as "I" or "you"
- All lower/upper case text
- Swearing
- Please write in an acceptable level of English. If English is not your first language, please ensure that you are confident enough with your fluency before contributing here.
- Although original research (such as gaining information from developers, or matching wallpapers to stock images) is allowed given the obscurity of this wiki's subject, please try to cite sources when possible. Failure to provide sources could result in the information being challenged and removed. For websites, this is how a source should look:
- {Surname of author}, {Firstname of author} ({Day} {Month} {Year}). [{URL} "{Title of page}"]. {Website title}.
- An example:
- Zheng, Long (26 January 2007). "Finding vistas, story of Windows Vista wallpapers". istartedsomething.
- Please follow the same layouts and sentence structures used in other articles. For example: the structure for images should look something like this (if it is not a stock photo and/or the photographer is unknown, leave those parts out):
- {Name of wallpaper}, originally known as {Its title on a stock photo site}, is a {Type} included in {OS}, licensed from {Stock photo agency}. It was taken by {Photographer}. It depicts {Description of the image}. {Other facts follow the rest}
- Please write from a neutral point-of-view. This wiki is intended to be factual, not opinionated. If a wallpaper is notorious for being considered ugly, it is better to write about how many people hold that opinion (e.g "This wallpaper is widely considered to have an unpleasant appearance.", rather than outright stating the opinion as fact. (e.g. "This wallpaper looks ugly and horrible.")
- If there are any terms you are unsure of, please see the glossary.
Content
- Try not to include too much information not relevant to Windows wallpapers in the articles, such as detailed information regarding applications in Windows. There are plenty of other places you can go to if you want to know about such information. A very brief overview of the operating system is fine though, just to provide a little bit of context for the reader.
- Do not add or create articles with intentional misinformation with the intent to mislead people. This could result in a permanent ban if done on a serious scale.
- Furthermore, do not create articles about fictional Windows versions (i.e "Windows Never Released" or "OS Mockups" versions) or their wallpapers, especially not with the intent to pass them off as real versions. This wiki only covers real world versions of Windows.
- The following are in the scope of this wiki:
- Preloaded Windows wallpapers, sample pictures, user account pictures and other backgrounds
- Downloadable official Windows wallpapers
- Backgrounds/display pictures included in downloadable Windows-related software (such as Windows Live Messenger)
- Microsoft Plus! wallpapers
- The following are not in the scope of this wiki and should not have articles here:
- Fanmade Windows-related wallpapers (such as unofficial theme wallpapers, wallpapers from unofficial modifications of Windows, random fanmade wallpapers)
- Non-Windows OS wallpapers (e.g macOS, Linux, Unix, etc)
- OEM wallpapers bundled on Windows devices (such as Dell, HP and Lenovo preloaded wallpapers - this also extends to Microsoft Surface wallpapers at present)
- Non-Windows Microsoft wallpapers (e.g Microsoft Surface Duo)
- Non-Windows wallpapers from companies Microsoft acquired, whether it was before or after the acquisition (e.g Nokia, Danger, etc)
- Xbox-related backgrounds/wallpapers (although these are Microsoft products and are powered by Windows-based operating systems, they are not marketed as Windows products at all)
- Content such as icons, sounds, music, graphics and fonts - this wiki is solely focused on wallpapers and other content that is similar to wallpapers, such as sample pictures and user account pictures
- Pretty much anything that is not related to Windows wallpapers
